School Transport

TRANSPORT

We encourage children to walk to school wherever possible. Most children do that or come on a scooter or bike . . . we even occasionally have a pupil travel on horseback. Children who live further afield may be dropped off or collected by vehicle, but some of them choose to walk or bring a scooter so they can travel the last part of the journey in that way.

There is plenty of space outside the school to drop off or pick up.

North Yorkshire’s Home to School Transport Policy

Pupils of compulsory school age are entitled to free school transport if they attend the nearest school for their home address and they live beyond the statutory walking distance as detailed below.

  • two miles for children under eight years of age;
  • three miles for children aged over eight; or
  • where the route to the catchment  is not safe to walk accompanied by a responsible adult

Low income

The following categories of children from low income families who are on free school meals are eligible for free home to school transport:

  • Children aged eight, but under the age of 11 who are attending their nearest school and the distance to that school is more than two miles;
  • Children in Years 7-11  who attend one of their three nearest secondary schools and the school is over two miles but less than twelve miles from where they live;
  • Children in Years 7-11 who attend the nearest denominational secondary school, where the distance is over two miles but less than 15 miles from home;
