School Meals

SCHOOL MEALS

All the school meals are cooked on site here at Nun Monkton. Our cheerful cook manages in a very small kitchen to whip up meals every day and have a friendly chat with the pupils during lunch time too. The whole school eats together in our downstairs area and are supervised by our team of teachers and teaching assistants during this time. We always have a first aider present during meal or snack times and staff are very aware of the need to have younger children in sight at all times and to cut food appropriately for the youngest pupils to reduce any risk of choking (in line with the EYFS guidance).

Our menu always has a choice of main meal or Jacket potato and for pudding there is a daily pudding choice or fruit or yoghurt. The Menu for spring / summer 2025 is available here;  INSERT MENU

We use NYES Catering service – you can click here School meals | North Yorkshire Council to find out more about their service and how they plan a balanced and award-winning menu for children across North Yorkshire.

Children can choose to bring a packed lunch. If they do, we ask that they bring a healthy selection of food and an ice pack to keep food cool until lunchtime in warmer weather. A useful Healthy Packed Lunch Leaflet  has been produced by the Healthy Schools Team at North Yorkshire.

COST OF MEALS

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to free school meals under the ‘Universal Infant Free School Meal Scheme’. You do not need to complete an application form, your child will automatically be provided with a school dinner each day, unless you choose to send them with a packed lunch.

Although this is not means-tested, if you do qualify for any financial support, we would encourage you to complete our online form as this could enable your child’s school to claim the Pupil Premium Funding to further support them. Pupil Premium Funding

The cost of school meals is currently £3.80 for children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Nursery children may have a school dinner, details of which are available from Ms Hirons our school administrator during Nursery application.

FOOD ALLERGY / SPECIAL DIET

If your child requires a vegetarian or vegan meal, has any food intolerances any other special dietary requirements, parents should complete a special diet form (SD1)  and return it to school. A copy is available on the ‘Forms’ section of this website or from the school office. Completing and returning the form will enable our cook and all staff to be aware of your child’s needs.

QUALIFYING FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS IN YEAR 3/4/5/6

Please follow this link which has further details of eligibility for free school meals and how to claim.

We encourage families who think they may be entitled to free school meals to apply, either by picking up a form in the school office (or using the one in the Forms section of this website) or applying online at NYES Free School Meals

Applications are usually processed within five working days. You will be notified in writing, either by post or email, if your child is entitled and we will also let the school know. You should continue to pay until confirmation comes through.

Free school meals claims cannot be backdated. They are awarded from the date we receive the application, once eligibility is confirmed. This is because there is a legal requirement for a request to be made, before a free school meal can be provided.

If you are not entitled to free school meals, you will be notified in writing.
